Diana Kautzky, founder and President of Deaf Services Unlimited (DSU), was born to Deaf parents. As a result, she learned to speak in American Sign Language as her first language. More importantly though, because she could hear, she became the medium through which her parents communicated with the world around them. Later Diana worked for the state commission for the deaf as an interpreter and ultimately she accepted the job of Director.
Living with Deaf parents and working in those positions, Diana experienced first-hand the growing need for quality, professional interpreting services. Up to that point in time, most interpreters were provided through government agencies, social service organizations, or in some cases by volunteers who had varying degrees of interpreting skills. Diana felt the level of professionalism needed to be developed, and the best way to do it would be to apply the principles of free enterprise to the interpreting industry.
By moving interpreting services into the private sector, DSU was able to nurture the communication environment and embrace the opportunity and responsibility of raising the standards of what quality interpreting service is all about. What sets Deaf Services Unlimited apart from other services is the commitment to excellence through national certification and on-going professional development and training. Every person that works for, and on behalf of, Deaf Services Unlimited upholds this expectation.
Moving from a social service to a professional service is the direction Deaf Services Unlimited is taking the interpreting industry. The bottom line is that everyone receives a higher quality of service and DSU is meeting that standard in the most efficient and effective way. Their commitment to providing businesses, educational institutions, medical providers, and civic and cultural events with extraordinary interpreting services is hallmarked by an experience that is easy, comfortable and positive for all involved.
